Pre-entry Community Care Policy
When your child can start preschool
Children can start preschool in the year they turn 3 years old (known as universal 3-year-old preschool) or 4 years old (known as year-before-school preschool).
If your child is turning 3 years old
Universal 3-year-old preschool will be available at our preschool from 2027.
Children offered a 3-year-old preschool place can start after they turn 3 years old and will receive up to 8 terms (2 years) of preschool. We will negotiate your child’s start date based on their third birthday.
Aboriginal children and children who are or have been in care are entitled to 15 hours of preschool a week after they turn 3, continuing until they start school.
If your child is turning 4 years old
All children have a guaranteed government preschool place in the year before school (4 terms).
Children offered a place will be able to start at the beginning of the school year (term 1) or through our mid-year intake (term 3).
Children who turn 4 years old:
*before 1 May can start preschool at the beginning of the year
*between 1 May to 31 October can start preschool in term 3 (mid-year intake)
*after 31 October can start preschool at the start of the following year
You can also use the age calculator on the department’s website to find out which intake your child is eligible for.
Children with disabilities or additional needs may access earlier 4-year-old preschool entry if places are available (does not guarantee early school entry). Talk to us if this applies.
